Open Outlook .msg emails without Outlook

See the whole email: who sent it, who got it, the message and the attachments. It opens in your browser and your files are never uploaded to any server.

You can open several at once. They stay on your computer.

How it works

Requirements

A recent browser. I tested it in Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Firefox.

.msg files up to 256 MB.

Open Mail Viewer for Windows

To open your .msg files with a double click and without internet. Download, requirements and verification.

The same tool as a program: it opens .msg files with a double click from your folder, in its own window, and works offline. It reads each file where it is, without copying it anywhere, and closes itself when you close the window.

Download the latest version - OpenMailViewer-win64.zip

  1. Unzip it wherever you like. Nothing gets installed and it doesn't ask for admin rights.
  2. Open OpenMailViewer.exe and drag your emails into the window. For the double click, right-click a .msg, choose Open with and find the app.
  3. When you open it, Windows may show "Windows protected your PC" because the app doesn't have a developer signature yet. Click More info and then Run anyway.
Version
Always the latest. Its number, date, changes and SHA-256 are on its GitHub page.
Requirements
Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with Microsoft Edge (it comes with Windows) or Google Chrome. I tested it on Windows 10 Pro.
To verify it
Run this in PowerShell, in the folder where you downloaded it, and compare the result with the version's SHA-256: Get-FileHash OpenMailViewer-win64.zip -Algorithm SHA256
Antivirus
The VirusTotal scan is in each version's notes. Some lesser-known antivirus programs may flag it with generic detections because it's a new program without a developer signature.
License
Free and open source (GPL-3.0, code on GitHub).
Privacy
Your emails never leave your PC. The app only goes online if you load an email's internet content or open a link.
